About Cate Regan Designs
My first color experience was housed in a box of 12 Crayola crayons and adorable but stubborn me, was 18 months old! If you want a total meltdown from a child like that, just try taking away her box of crayons!! From then until now it’s been a colorful life’s journey, a fifty year journey of painting with oil, wax, dyes and watercolor.
And now that lifelong passion for color has suddenly taken a new and exciting turn. I have become the Creator of the COLOR. Through research and intense experimentation I have developed a line of handmade watercolors that I sell under the name of Cate Regan Colours through my online store. Some of the watercolors are translucent, some opaque and but almost without exception they all contain a hidden sparkle.
Cate Regan Colours are 100% handmade watercolors produced in micro batches of 6-8 pans. The watercolors are mixed from pure raw pigments mulled with a binder on a hand ground marble slab using a solid glass muller. Since the paints are made and poured by hand, they understandably do not look perfect. It is normal to have some cracking or bubbles but this in no way affects the quality of the paint.
In my studio this color is created with the highest quality pigments. Because I come from a professional mixed media background I often will add inks, dyes, micas, earth pigments and minerals to the initial dry pigment. There are many times in the studio, after I’ve created a color and packed it away in the pans that my childish imp will whisper in my ear…”what would happen if…” and suddenly an OOAK (one of a kind) color is born with color additives I often forget to take note of. My colors are playful and made for the experimental painter. Someone who loves working with mixed media, treasures the moments she spends art journaling and often the much envied calligrapher for whom my colors offer more options than traditional manufacturers. These are colors not often found in nature but traditional painters will often add a golden streak to a sunrise or sunset and create an unexpected focal point.
Most of the colors have a shimmer because mixing color for me is a meditative journey and sprinkling in some mica often times brings me to a place that is colorfully unexpected. But despite the often unexpected color I end up with, I always start in the same place. Mixing organic gum Arabic and pure honey with a dash of a natural anti-fungal to keep the mold from ruining that beautiful color. The quietness of my studio with soft Celtic music playing is what begins this mystical, magical colorful journey.
I stand behind everything I make so if you are not completely satisfied please convo me via the Etsy app or store chat. I will attempt to get back to you within 8 hours or less. Thank you for purchasing Cate Regan Colours.
